This 16th century, or earlier, Gesso gilt polychrome cassone has many unique features, including some we are still researching such as the family to whom the crest belongs. We are also further investigating the age as it is quite possible this is a 16th century cassone as this was the period they were most prevalent. This cassone is decorated in much gold gilt gesso and hand-carved wood with a well carved wreath surrounding the yet to be identified family crest. Each corner has a large leaf which is supported by a winged lion which is the emblem of the Republic of Venice. The exterior velvet which is original to the piece was a prized possession, especially in the pomegranate color, in the 16th century lending credence to the earlier dating.

Cassone or cassoni (plural) became popular in the mid-15th century for use a marriage chest or casket for the bride to bring her precious item from her family home to her new residence. Often two casconi were made, one for the bride and the groom bearing the crests of their respective families. The couples new crest would then be a combination of the two families crests in quadrants cementing the union of the two families. These were often the most important piece of furniture in the new house hold.

In the 18th and 19th centuries these relics were often dismantled and their parts were used for other pieces thus making a well intact original quite rare and truly a collector's piece.

Capture this great piece at this conservative price now as it will likely rise substantially when our research is complete.

Also called a chest or marriage coffer.
