This wonderful traveling (zushi) shrine dates from the late Edo to early Meiji Period. The character in the center is Fudo Myo-o and he is seated, holding a sword with a fierce, menacing expression which is meant to conquer evil and pave the way to enlightenment. He is wearing a halo of flames. The shrine has two doors that conceal the statue that is revealed upon opening in a wonderful gilt interior. The piece is well mounted on an ornate bronze frame. This is an exceptional and unusual item to enhance any collection.
